Engines, also called Search Engines, Internet Directories, Indices and Lists,
are vast data bases that compile information about the many thousands of web
sites on the Internet. These serve as directories for those seeking information
on the WWW. Some of the engines such as Yahoo, AltaVista, WebCrawler and InfoSeek
are quite well known. But there are also literally hundreds of lesser known
engines that are extremely useful on which you should also register your site.
Each Search Engine has its own rules about registration. Some lists permit
only a short Description from the applicant site, as little as thirty characters.
Others allow a liberal amount of information, some up to 175 words. Listing
of Keywords and Key Phrases can also be an important factor.
Keywords - As you are probably aware,
search engines index in part by cataloging Keywords provided by web site registration
and/or embodied in the text of our web site. Many Engines also scan the Key
Phrases and Descriptions that are submitted. These Keywords are
then used as an index in site identification.
Keywords were used for Apple Computer registration:
"Apple Computer, Power Macintosh, PowerBook,
AppleWorks, WebObjects, iMovie, QuickTime, Desktop Movies, Software, Operating
Systems, Mac OS, iMac, iBook"
As you can see each of these words has some connection with Apple
Computer. With some words, the connections are quite direct, others
are more collateral or secondary. The idea is that a person searching on the
net with the purpose of obtaining additional information about a business
plan or business plan software, would.
You should now analyze your own enterprise. What Keywords are suggested by
your field of endeavor? Think and rethink the most logical words.
Key Phrases
Proceed by next selecting Key Phrases.
We will be composing a series of phrases which are brief combinations of two
or more words that maximize the use of your Keywords. People searching the
web will often enter pertinent phrases in attempting to locate categories
of web sites that are of particular interest to them. This is where your Key
Phrases will pay off. Again, using Apple Computer, the following are
examples of logical Key Phrases: software for kids, notebook computers, web power tools, decisions, projecting profits,
expansion projects, etc.
Descriptions - Engines permit Descriptions
of web sites. Some allow only the briefest mention, 30 characters, others
allow a generous message of 175 words or more. There are many increments in
between allowed by different search engines, e.g. 25 to 50 words, 51 to 75
words, etc. An important part of Net Copywriting is to catalog Descriptions
of varying lengths.
Site Title
You probably already have selected a title when you originally constructed
your web site. You should be aware that the chance of appearing near or at
the top of the list is sometimes greater with Site Titles in the lower alphabet
(A, B, C, etc.) depending on the Promotional Engine.
Some of the major engines will index a site immediately but not post the
site for a few weeks so be patient.
There are many reasons why your site may not score as high as you like, or
you may not find it at all.
